How to get Started

As a beginner you will be encouraged to ease into classes without any pressure, and to rest when necessary.  We practice in a non-competitive environment so, whatever your level of experience, whatever your fitness level, you will always be supported and respected;  though the very nature of yoga practice means you will also be constantly challenged to come out of your comfort zone ... that's the exciting part of course!

The first step out of your comfort zone may be to simply turn up to your first class, but you may do so in the knowledge that all our students and teachers did precisely that themselves at one stage - so we know and understand exactly how you feel.  No need to be afraid - although yoga is a discipline, the classes are actually a lot of fun and are usually laced with plenty of good humour.

If you are an absolute beginner, with no previous yoga experience, you will be required to begin at our Basics Class level.  Generally, a minimum of four Basics classes is recommended before moving on to the Open Class level;  however, all students progress differently, so do seek the guidance of your teacher.  Similarly, even if you are a more experienced student but have not practised for some time, or if your previous experience has been in a different style of yoga, then it may be appropriate for you to begin in this way.  To help you get started, check out our Beginners Pass which enables you to get five Basics classes in your first month for just $45 - see our price list for full details.

Alternatively you may choose to start with one of our Introductory Courses or Introductory Workshops.    These popular classes will help you establish an important foundation in the Yoga Tapas programme.  Our next Introductory Workshop is scheduled for Sunday 4 March, 10.00 am to midday.  Price is $100, which includes one month of unlimited classes (total value $180).  Click here for full details and registration.

Students who have sufficient previous experience in Ashtanga Yoga, or who have previously completed a Yoga Tapas Introductory Course or Workshop, are welcome to join the class of your choice at any time.

Basics classes are 60 minutes in duration, and while providing plenty of instruction for beginners, we will still offer some challenging options for the more experienced yoga student.  These classes form the basis for understanding the particular way in which we practice at this school.

Whilst all Open classes are vigorous and challenging in nature, they still have lots of instruction, allowing you to experience basic postures and movements that help to develop strength, flexibility, concentration and balance through dynamic breathing and movement.  Suitable modifications will also be offered for beginning students.

If you are not sure which is the most appropriate level for you to begin then please phone (03)5394565 or email first.  We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Though no-one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start now and make a brand new end.
