Injury & Illness
We all live with degrees of injury, illness, pain, weakness and imbalance. The tendency these days is to seek out the "easy-fix" methods by seeking the help of various medical professionals and anything that will ease our pain and suffering, such as pain-suppressing medication, which as we know is usually only treating the symptoms and not addressing the root causes.
With around five thousand years of history as a healing tool, yoga teaches us how to search for and, more importantly, find the answers within the framework of our own body and mind; to internalise our healing rather than externalising, which is what we do when we attempt to ease our discomfort outside of ourselves.
We live in a world where it's all about comfort, about doing whatever we have to do to avoid dis-comfort and pain and dis-ease. Yoga teaches us how to negotiate our way through our pain and suffering to tremendous health and well-being.
On the mat we learn to confront, experience, understand, accept, live with, and let go of the difficulties of our lives. And in so doing we learn to live fully ...
- Rolf Gates, "Meditations from the Mat"
We see students free themselves from back and neck pain, often after many years of suffering through endless treatments that never seem to actually change anything; strengthen knee and shoulder joints after years of living with sports injuries.
Many students rapidly address asthma and general breathing difficulties. It is said that "breath is life", yet so often we pay almost no attention to the very breath that we absolutely need to survive. Studies show that the average person only uses 1/10th to 1/6th of their lung capactiy .... did anyone ever teach you how to breathe correctly? Right from the very beginning you will learn how to breathe, as the breath forms a major part of the foundation of everything we do.
Numerous students who have suffered for many years from chronic migraines, insomnia, anxiety, ADHD, depression, anorexia, bi-polar disorder, and many other disorders, have discovered (through the discipline of regular practice) the ability to live more joyful lives and free themselves from dependence on medication.
The answer is usually always the same with regard to all illness and injury - simply start.
Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and to endure what cannot be cured.
- B K S Iyengar
